About Kyle of Lochalsh
Kyle of Lochalsh is a small port village on Scotland's northwestern coast, situated at the entrance to Loch Alsh opposite Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye, approximately 100 km west of Inverness. The harbour features a marina for yachts and leisure craft, and the village serves as the shopping and transport hub for the surrounding region. Dramatic Highland scenery and unique wildlife are the primary draws for cruise visitors.
The Skye Bridge, opened in 1995, spans Loch Alsh to Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye and is an immediately accessible landmark that replaced the storied ferry crossing. The Kyle of Lochalsh railway station — whose tracks terminate literally at the water's edge near the old ferry pier — has served as a regional icon since 1897, appearing in the BBC's 'Great Railway Journeys Of The World' documentary (1980). The surrounding Highland scenery and unique wildlife are the area's primary tourist draw. Nearby Plockton, together with Kyle of Lochalsh, formed the filming backdrop for the BBC series 'Hamish MacBeth' (1995). The Royal Naval BUTEC submarine range control centre is also based here.
