Kuching cruise port guide

On the island of Borneo, the state of Sarawak invites you to live out your dreams of adventure. The largest state in Malaysia is home to some of the oldest forest on the planet and we can easily understand why this little corner of paradise inspired Somerset Maugham, the British writer and traveller, to write one of his novels - The Casuarina Tree. We invite you to follow in the footsteps of the writer and set off to discover the colonial capital of the State: Kuching, which is known as ”Cat City” in Malay, where a feline languor does indeed permeate this tantalizingly elusive city. Lying nonchalantly on the banks of the Sungai Sarawak, this little city is proud of its romantic past and its quaint charm and beauty.

About Kuching

Kuching, the capital of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, is a compact, walkable city celebrated as Malaysia's 'Cat City' and a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Situated on the Sarawak River, it is the primary gateway for travellers visiting Sarawak and Borneo, offering a distinctive blend of colonial heritage, vibrant Chinatown, and world-class ecotourism. Safe and multicultural, the city draws visitors with rich indigenous cultures, ancient rainforests, and landmarks from the storied era of the White Rajahs.

The region around Kuching holds some of Borneo's most celebrated natural destinations: Bako National Park for rainforest wildlife encounters, Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, and Kuching Wetlands National Park approximately 30 km from the city. In the urban core, the Sarawak State Museum and Borneo Cultures Museum provide deep context on the island's indigenous peoples, while The Astana and Fort Margherita are enduring landmarks of the White Rajah era on the Kuching River. Chinatown in the Padungan district is Kuching's oldest commercial hub, ideal for browsing and dining, and the annual Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) is one of the region's signature cultural events. The Kuching Cat Museum is a characterful stop reflecting the city's famous feline identity.
