Kos cruise port guide
Just a stone’s throw from the coast of Turkey, Kos is a lush destination with plenty of history. Perhaps most famous as the birthplace of Hippocrates, since the early days of civilization this tiny island has welcomed intellectuals, scholars, and fellow world travelers seeking a little rest and relaxation. Head to the center of Kos town (founded in 366 BC) and visit the Hippocratic Museum to learn more about the father of western medicine. Then just keep on walking because this old town is a pedestrian’s dream: car-free streets filled with interesting shops that offer everything from jewelry and ceramics to paintings and intricately embroidered tablecloths. Wander through the central market to pick up bottles of authentic olive oil, thyme-honey, and local produce like figs, grapes, and almonds.
About Kos
Kos is a Greek island in the Dodecanese archipelago of the southeastern Aegean Sea, celebrated for its long beaches, ancient ruins, and vibrant town centre. Tourism is the island's primary industry, with a wide range of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife centred on Kos town. The island also offers yachting, windsurfing, and kiteboarding, with a well-equipped marina at the old harbour.
Kos rewards history-minded visitors with a concentrated cluster of antiquities: the Ancient Agora, Roman Odeon, House of Europa, Casa Romana, Archaeological Museum, the revered Asclepieion, the legendary Tree of Hippocrates, and the Castle/Fortress of Neratzia. Beach options are equally diverse — Lakkos offers cedars and dunes, Agios Fokas is noted for dark sand, and Kefalos Bay shelters several distinct strands including Camel, Paradise, Polemi, and Psilos Gremos. At remote Cape Krikelos, the beaches of Skinos, Theologos, and Moscholiou provide seclusion. The marina at the old harbour is well-equipped for yachting, and windsurfing and kiteboarding schools operate at Kefalos Bay and the northwestern Mastichari and Kohilari beaches.
