About Ireland Island

Cobh, on Great Island in Cork Harbour near the mouth of the River Lee, is home to the only dedicated cruise ship berth in the Republic of Ireland, operated by the Port of Cork company. The island's largest town carries a deep maritime and naval heritage stretching back centuries, now complemented by a growing cruise tourism economy. In 2025, the berth welcomed 90 cruise ships carrying 170,000 passengers.

Great Island's primary draw for cruise visitors is Cobh itself, whose townscape was shaped by the expansion of shipping and naval activity during the 19th century. Beyond the town, the island preserves a remarkable range of historic structures: Belvelly Castle, a 13th-century Anglo-Norman fortification at one of the island's narrowest crossings, and a series of coastal defence Martello towers at Belvelly, Monning, and Rossleague built in the 19th century. Nature enthusiasts can visit Cuskinny Marsh Nature Reserve, managed by BirdWatch Ireland and home to kingfishers and cormorants, and the Great Island Channel Special Area of Conservation, where bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises, and seals are occasionally seen. Marlogue Wood, operated by Coillte, provides additional green space. Adjacent Fota Island, reached via the 1803 Belvelly Bridge, offers a further excursion destination before rejoining the mainland by causeway.
