Hundred Islands cruise port guide

Hundred Islands

About Hundred Islands

Charlotte Amalie, on the southern shore of Saint Thomas, is the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands and one of the busiest cruise ports of call in the Caribbean. Its deep-water harbor—once a haven for pirates including Blackbeard—welcomes approximately 1.5 million cruise passengers annually. The town is known for its Danish colonial architecture, historic landmarks, and duty-free shopping.

The town's most notable landmarks are all walkable from the waterfront. Fort Christian, begun in 1672, is the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands Archipelago. Blackbeard's Castle on Government Hill is a designated U.S. National Historic Landmark dating to the 17th century. The St. Thomas Synagogue is the second-oldest in the western hemisphere. Emancipation Garden, near the harbor, holds a replica Liberty Bell and commemorative sculpture. The Frenchtown neighborhood, southwest of downtown, preserves French-Caribbean traditions brought by 19th-century immigrants from Saint-Barthélemy and retains an active fishing community.
