Hoonah cruise port guide
Discover the frontier town of Icy Strait surrounded by nature in its unspoiled glory. Pine trees as tall as skyscrapers, humpback whales, eagles, wild salmon, black bears and more, form the harmonious tapestry of life in this Alaskan hinterland. Visit the Native Theater and Heritage Center to see Tlinglit tribal members enacting their history through song and dance. Also worthy of attention are the elaborately carved totem poles. Stroll over to the Cannery Museum and find out how this staple of the Alaskan diet is processed. Shop for locally made preserves, jewelry, wooden carvings, clothing, and bath products. Take a walk along the well-marked nature trail to Hoonah. Enjoy delicious and abundant seafood, Dungeness crab, salmon, shrimp and cod in this remarkable natural environment.
About Hoonah
Icy Strait Point is the only privately owned cruise destination in Alaska, located on Chichagof Island in Hoonah—Alaska's largest Native Tlingit village—and operated by the Alaska Native Huna Totem Corporation since 2004. Two floating docks (the first completed 2016, a megaship-capable second completed 2022) replaced earlier tendering operations, with all site profits directed to the Hoonah community. In 2024, approximately 240 cruise ship calls brought around 500,000 passengers to the terminal.
The port's flagship excursion is the ZipRider zip-line—one of the longest and highest in North America, opened May 2007 and rated a statewide 'must do' by the Anchorage Daily News. Wildlife options include coastal brown bear viewing on the Spasski River and humpback whale watching near the Point Adolphus feeding area. At the dock, the restored 1930s Hoonah Packing Company cannery houses a museum, restaurant, and Alaska-owned shops, complemented by traditionally garbed Huna Tlingit cultural presenters and an indoor theatrical production. Alaska's Wildest Kitchen offers hands-on salmon and halibut preparation by local residents. Kléet Plaza (dedicated June 2021) features a life-sized bronze orca by Wyland, donated by Norwegian Cruise Line.
