About Hermanus
Hermanus is a coastal town on Walker Bay, approximately 115 km southeast of Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape province, widely regarded as the world's best land-based whale watching destination. Southern Right whales are observable from the cliff-top paths from June through December, with a town-appointed whale crier — a role continuously held since 1992 — blowing a kelp horn to announce sightings. Beyond whale watching, visitors find Blue Flag beaches, historic harbour museums, and the biodiverse Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
The primary experience is whale watching, either from the walkable cliff paths above Walker Bay or on regular boat tours from the harbour. The Whale Museum houses a complete skeleton and screens audio-visual presentations on cetaceans twice daily; the Old Harbour Museum documents the town's whaling and fishing past; and the De Wetshuis Photo Museum presents T.D. Ravenscroft's historical photography. Fernkloof Nature Reserve, situated within the Cape Floristic Region, contains 1,474 plant species and over 100 recorded bird varieties. Grotto Beach — the largest in Hermanus — and Voëlklip Beach both hold Blue Flag certification. For the adventurous, Gansbaai (40 km away) provides access to great white shark cage diving near Dyer Island. The annual Hermanus Whale Festival, held at the end of September, adds crafts, food stalls, and environmental programming.
