About Great Stirrup Cay
Great Stirrup Cay is a 268-acre private island in the Berry Islands owned by Norwegian Cruise Line since 1977, the first private cruise island in the Bahamas. A new pier opened December 28, 2025.
The northern part of the island features a sandy beach with snorkeling areas at Bertram's Cove. The island's 1863 lighthouse (built by the Imperial Lighthouse Service, now solar-powered) stands nearly 80 feet and is visible for over 20 miles. The southern part retains remnants of a former U.S. military LORAC radio-navigation station (closed 1991), including two cable houses and a former helipad. Two notable graves on the island include Captain Allan Bertram (Royal Navy, died 1834) and Elizabeth Wright Braden Hixson (passenger, died 1838). Great Stirrup Cay is a protected marine life sanctuary.
