About Gorinchem

Gorinchem (also spelled Gorkum) is a city in South Holland, Netherlands, with nearly intact 16th-century star fort fortifications, voted the most beautiful star fort in the Netherlands in 2021.

The nearly complete ring of 16th-century star fort fortifications with eleven bastions is the city's principal attraction. Of the original four city gates, only the Dalem Gate survives. The city has significant Catholic historical importance: nineteen priests and monks captured in 1572 were hanged and canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1867 as the Martyrs of Gorkum, commemorated annually.
