Boppard cruise port guide
The town of Boppard is located in the Middle Rhine Valley and has many small shops, a beautiful old town and a medieval tower. A castle rises majestically high above the small town on the Rhine, as there are numerous in the Middle Rhine Valley. You feel as if you have been transported back in the Middle Ages. There is a campsite on the Rhine. Boppard is connected to the Rhine cities in Hesse by a small ferry. There are no bridges between Mainz and Koblenz, as the Middle Rhine Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
About Boppard
Boppard is a historic town in Germany's Rhine Gorge — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 — offering cruise passengers a picturesque stop along the upper Middle Rhine. A state-recognized tourism resort and winegrowing centre, the town is best known for the Bopparder Hamm, the Rhine's greatest bend, and the panoramic Vierseenblick lookout accessible by chairlift.
The Vierseenblick is Boppard's signature viewpoint, reached by chairlift, where the sharp curves of the Rhine Gorge make the river appear as four distinct lakes rather than a single watercourse — an effect produced entirely by intervening hilltops. The Bopparder Hamm wine region stretches along the Rhine's greatest bend, one of the most celebrated winegrowing landscapes on the Middle Rhine. The Römerkastell Boppard, a Late Roman castrum constructed in the 4th century during the reign of Emperor Valentinian I, offers a tangible connection to the town's ancient past as the Roman settlement of Vicus Baudobriga. The historic town centre retains remnants of its time as a free imperial city and later as part of the Electorate of Trier, including the Alte Burg (Old Castle) toll fortress.
