The Römerkastell Boppard, a Late Roman castrum constructed in the 4th century during the reign of Emperor Valentinian I, offers a tangible connection to the town's ancient past as the Roman settlement of Vicus Baudobriga. The historic town centre retains remnants of its time as a free imperial city and later as part of the Electorate of Trier, including the Alte Burg (Old Castle) toll fortress.
