Blaye is a commune and subprefecture in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. For centuries, Blaye was a particularly convenient crossing point for those who came from the north and went to Bordeaux or further south, to Spain and Portugal.
About Blaye
Blaye is a small fortified town on the Gironde estuary north of Bordeaux, a stop on river cruises along the Gironde. The town is dominated by the Citadelle de Blaye, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designed by Vauban, offering panoramic views over the estuary. Passengers explore the medieval citadel, wine caves of the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, and the historic connection to the privateer Pierre Morpain, who was born in Blaye around 1686.
