About Bastia, Corsica
Bastia is the principal port and commercial capital of Corsica, located in the northeast of the island at the base of Cap Corse. It is the main ferry hub linking Corsica to mainland France and Italy, with a charming Vieux Port (Old Port), a Genoese citadel, and easy access to the dramatic Cap Corse peninsula.
The Vieux Port is the social heart of Bastia — restaurants line the quayside and the twin towers of Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste dominate the scene. The citadel (Terra Nova) is reached by climbing through the Romieu gardens; inside is the Palais de Gouverneurs with the city museum and the ornate Baroque Oratorio Sainte-Croix. The quintessential Bastia shore excursion is a circuit of Cap Corse — the D80 mountain road requires a full day and a confident driver, rewarding with Genoese watchtowers, fishing harbors, and vineyard views.
