Banda Neira cruise port guide

From age-old traditional cultures and ancient vestiges, to coral reefs and lush green jungle… The attractions of the remote Banda archipelago seem endless. Better known as the legendary “Spice Islands” of the Ancient World, these small volcanic landmasses were the fabled prize of colonial powers for more than four centuries. Every colonial power of significance fought for control of these ten small islands that today have become largely forgotten. Walking the streets of Banda Neira is a surreal experience as your eyes are drawn to the eclectic mix of Portuguese, Dutch and British architecture, the remnants of a rich and tumultuous history. It is without doubt the most historically significant and interesting of all the “Spice Islands”.

About Banda Neira

Banda Neira is the main island and administrative center of the Banda Islands, once the world's sole source of nutmeg and mace, and now a remote Maluku archipelago renowned for exceptional scuba diving, snorkeling, and Dutch colonial fortifications. Cruise ships typically tender passengers to the small harbor of this historic spice trade capital.

Fort Belgica, perched on the hill above town, is the most impressive monument — a pentagonal Dutch fortress built in the early 1600s, now well preserved with panoramic views. Fort Nassau near the waterfront is older but more ruinous. Nutmeg plantation tours on Banda Besar reveal the spice history that made these islands geopolitically crucial for two centuries. Snorkeling and diving directly from shore around the caldera rim islands are outstanding, with steep walls dropping into deep water, healthy hard corals, and abundant reef fish.
