Aswan cruise port guide
Aswan, a city on the Nile River, has been southern Egypt’s strategic and commercial gateway since antiquity. It contains significant archaeological sites like the Philae temple complex, on Agilkia Island near the landmark Aswan Dam. Philae’s ruins include the columned Temple of Isis, dating to the 4th century B.C. Downriver, Elephantine Island holds the Temple of Khnum, from the Third Dynasty. ―
About Aswan
Aswan is a city of 370,000 in southern Egypt, capital of Aswan Governorate, on the east bank of the Nile at the first cataract. It is a major winter tourist destination and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
The Nubian Museum is the city's cultural centrepiece, housing artefacts rescued before the Aswan Dam flooded Lower Nubia. The Unfinished Obelisk in the ancient granite quarries offers a unique view of ancient construction techniques. Elephantine Island contains Nubian villages and the Aswan Museum. Philae Temple, accessible by boat, is one of Egypt's finest Ptolemaic monuments. The Tombs of the Nobles on the west bank include the superbly preserved Tomb of Sarenput II.
