Antigua, Leeward Islands cruise port guide
Antigua, as sweet as the sugar cane form the plantations, welcomes us in a warm embrace and giving us the opportunity to swim in its beautiful sea. We stop in the port of Antigua, an old colony where we can see the vestiges of the agricultural past of the island. Sugar is no longer the livelihood of this small nation, but you can still visit the old windmills of Fuerteventura. Take a dance class at the Shiva school of dance or catch a show of traditional dances from the Caribbean. Before the cruise resumes its course, enjoy a spectacular sunset on the beach, swim with the stingrays and admire the underwater fauna.
About Antigua, Leeward Islands
Antigua is a Caribbean island in the Leeward Islands group, with its capital St. John's serving as the main cruise port. Ships dock at Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, both within easy walking distance of the city center's shopping malls, boutiques, and duty-free stores. St. John's has a population of about 22,000 and serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Antigua and Barbuda.
Beyond the quays, Antigua's draw is its beaches—the island is said to have 365 of them. The Antigua Rum Distillery at the Citadel offers tours. English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard, a short drive south, is a restored Georgian-era naval base and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island's hilly interior and reef-fringed coastline support sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking excursions.
