About Angra do Heroismo, Terceira Islands, Azores
Angra do Heroísmo is the historic capital of Terceira Island in the Azores archipelago. The Bay of Angra has served as a vital mid-Atlantic port of call since the 15th century, when returning merchant ships laden with gold, silver, porcelain, and spices from the East Indies and Brazil would anchor here awaiting armed escorts. The city and its fortified historic center are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Bay of Angra itself is an underwater archaeological park, with historic shipwreck sites including the Brazilian steamboat Lidador (1878) and Confederate steamship Run'her (1863). The Cemetery of Anchors is another underwater site of interest. Monte Brasil, the volcanic promontory defending the bay, offers panoramic views and historic fortifications including the Fort of São Sebastião.
