About Alta do Chao

Alter do Chão is a small village near the city of Santarém in the western part of the state of Pará, Brazil. Famed for the crystalline turquoise waters of the Tapajós River, it has been called the 'Caribbean of Brazil,' and The Guardian ranked its beach as the most beautiful in Brazil.

The village lies along the banks of the Tapajós River, whose crystalline waters form more than 100 km of natural beaches. Alter do Chão hosts the Sairé folklore festival annually in September, one of the most important regional cultural events. The confluence of the Amazon and Tapajós rivers near Santarém — the 'meeting of the waters' — is a key natural attraction in the region.
