Abu Simbel cruise port guide
Abu Simbel is a village in the Egyptian part of Nubia, about 240 km southwest of Aswan and near the border with Sudan. As of 2012, it has about 2600 inhabitants. It is best known as the site of the Abu Simbel temples, which were built by King Ramses II.
About Abu Simbel
Abu Simbel is an ancient temple complex on the western bank of Lake Nasser, famously relocated in a UNESCO-led campaign in the 1960s before the Aswan High Dam flooded the area. Cruise ships on Lake Nasser itineraries call here to visit the twin temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari.
The Great Temple of Ramesses II features four colossal seated statues of the pharaoh at the entrance, and an inner sanctuary aligned so that twice a year (around 22 February and 22 October) sunlight penetrates 65 metres to illuminate the inner sanctuary. The smaller Temple of Hathor is dedicated to Queen Nefertari.
