The capital of Martinique, and by far the biggest city in the whole of the French West Indies, if you are looking for Paris in the Caribbean, you’ll find it in Fort de France. The island has been under French govern since 1638 when the first governor of Martinique Jacques Dyel du Parquet commissioned a fort (from which the city takes its name) to keep out invaders. Not even an unsuccessful attack by the British in 1720, nor the French Revolution in 1789, has been able to shake the French govern of the island and today the city’s French and Creole heritage are impossible to untangle. The colonial past is everywhere, take a stroll down the narrow streets and enjoy the remarkable architecture of the Schœlcher Library, St. Louis Cathedral and the Old Town Hall. Day 4 Apr 19, 2027 West End, Tortolo 09:00 – 17:00 8.0 hrs ashore The Royal Naval Dockyard, the westernmost point in Bermuda, not only showcases Bermuda's nautical heritage, but it also provides a home for an impressive array of attractions and shopping opportunities. The fortifications of the Royal Naval Dockyard were built by British convicts and slave labor during the mid-1800s. Since then it has served many purposes, including the headquarters for the Royal Navy and a strategic defense post for the British in the North Atlantic. Most recently it has been redeveloped into a fascinating attraction offering visitors a glimpse into Bermuda's history, and has become a fun place to shop or explore. The centerpiece of the Dockyard is the commanding Clocktower building, which once served as a naval store and the captain's offices. Today, it has been marvelously restored. Day 12 Apr 27, 2027 Gibraltar 08:00 – 17:00 9.0 hrs ashore Gibraltar is one of the most famous places in the world, linked to numerous legends. Here, the Mediterranean ended and with it the world, but fortunately today we know that’s not the case. Its strategic position meant that it was disputed over for many centuries by the seafaring nations who had political and commercial interests between Europe and Africa. Although set-piece buildings such as Diocletian’s mausoleum (now the cathedral) and the Temple of Jupiter (now a baptistery) still remain, other aspects of the palace have been tinkered with so much by successive generations that it is no longer recognizable as an ancient Roman structure. Best place to start exploring with an MSC excursion the seaward side of the palace is Split’s broad and lively Riva.
