Why this route stands out

A closer look at the journey

Miami, Florida

Miami is called the gateway to the Americas, and it’s indeed a very glamourous global city to explore at the start or end of an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise. Home to many cultures, the city of Miami sizzles with flavours from the Americas, beginning with Cuba and the Little Havana neighbourhood - one of the most historically significant places, while Wynwood is famous for its wall art and Puerto Rican history. Across Biscayne Bay lies the city of Miami Beach, home to the world-famous South Beach. An MSC-arranged guided private tour opens up a world of possibilities for you: enjoy the beach, take in the city’s Art Deco architecture and enjoy a drink on legendary Ocean Drive, where you can people watch, and perhaps spot a celebrity. If time permits, take a stroll on artsy Lincoln Road packed with street side cafes and shops. Facing the MSC Cruises port in downtown Miami is Bayside Marketplace - a lively commercial centre that is a staging area for boat tours of Miami. Seeing the city from the water, with its impressive skyline and waterfront mansions, is an experience in itself. The downtown area also boasts the dazzling Performing Arts Centre, the Museum of Science, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (known as the PAMM), scenic Bayfront Park and the arena where the 3-time NBA champion Miami Heat basketball team plays. Miami is renowned for its shopping. Hop on a tour to see the major city sights followed by retail therapy at one of Miami's largest and newest shopping malls: Dolphin Mall. With more than 240 retail outlets, you’re bound to need a bit of room in your luggage for your purchases. Luckily, there are several luggage stores at the mall to fill that need. Head west past the city into untamed wilderness on an MSC excursion into the Everglades. At this national park where water is the central feature, unlike any other in North America, nature enthusiasts can hop on an airboat tour through the swampland and waterways to spot alligators and a variety of birds.

Port of Spain

Trinidad and Tobago is an ideal place to take refuge in nature, while also enjoying the folklore, rhythms and flavours of the island enriched by its melting pot of cultures that can be traced back to Africa, India, Europe, the Middle East and China. Well known for pristine beaches and ancient rainforests, Trinidad’s Northern Range mountains, which cover a quarter of the island, are home to almost 500 different species of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish and 620 types of butterflies. The island has been awarded the title of the world's most environmentally friendly destination, as well as the Caribbean's foremost natural attraction. Once you arrive on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise in the bustling capital of Port of Spain, book one of our scenic drives to experience breath-taking panoramic views of Port of Spain. Drive by striking buildings such as the parliament and the row of colonial houses originally built as private residences known as The Magnificent Seven. Or surround yourself with exotic trees and tropical flowers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, established in 1818. Leaving town, journey on an MSC excursion to the edge of Trinidad's rainforest to ascend to the Mount St. Benedict's Monastery, known as the Abbey of Our Lady of Exile, 660 feet above sea level. Nestled peacefully in the mountains, the monastery was originally founded by Brazilian monks as a refuge for monks and anybody suffering religious persecution. Here your guide will provide a cultural and historical perspective of the monks who have lived a contemplative life for decades. The monastery welcomes people of all faiths. Need to unwind? Let us take you to Maracas Bay, a popular beach lined with palm trees and surrounded by densely covered hills. It’s the ideal spot to soak up some sun. If you’re searching for wildlife, grab your camera and join us on an MSC excursion to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary. Perfect for bird-watchers, you’ll travel along the mangroves on a flat-bottom boat or kayak and see the nesting home of the scarlet ibis and other species. Or drive through cocoa, citrus and coffee plantations to the Asa Wright Nature Centre, nestled in the Aripo Valley, for a walk through the tropical rainforest with a naturalist guide.

Santarem

The first settlement in Santarém was a Jesuit mission built in 1661. The next arrivals consisted of a group of Confederate refugees. They came to Santarém after the American Civil War in the hope of creating a new slaving state. Few of them stayed very long, but they left their mark in certain family and trade names. In the 1920s, during the rubber boom, Henry Ford spent $80 million to establish an enormous rubber plantation for the production of automobile tires. The project ended in disaster when many of his workers died from malaria and Ford realized that there were too many obstacles to overcome. Over the years, Santarém developed into one of the region's most important trading centers. Today, it is the third largest city on the Amazon after Manaus and Belém. One of Santarém's major attractions is the "Meeting of the Waters," where the crystalline blue waters of the Rio Tapajos flow side by side with the muddy-brown Amazon without merging (similar to the Negro and Solimões rivers near Manaus). Points of interest include the Town Hall Museum with displays of pottery made by the Tupai Indians, the Municipal Market and the Casa da Farinha, an old manioc flour factory, where demonstrations can be seen on how to extract latex from rubber trees. Around Santarem there are lakes and lush forests that are home to numerous species of birds. Your arrival into port already offers a good introduction to local color. Numerous river boats are tied up along the pier, some of them unloading goods and produce, others providing transportation for the local population to river communities for over 200 miles around, as well as long-distance services to Manaus and Belém.
