The capital of Martinique, and by far the biggest city in the whole of the French West Indies, if you are looking for Paris in the Caribbean, you’ll find it in Fort de France. The island has been under French govern since 1638 when the first governor of Martinique Jacques Dyel du Parquet commissioned a fort (from which the city takes its name) to keep out invaders. Not even an unsuccessful attack by the British in 1720, nor the French Revolution in 1789, has been able to shake the French govern of the island and today the city’s French and Creole heritage are impossible to untangle. The colonial past is everywhere, take a stroll down the narrow streets and enjoy the remarkable architecture of the Schœlcher Library, St. Louis Cathedral and the Old Town Hall. Among the many legacies Dyel du Parquet left on the island is sugarcane. Day 4 Apr 19, 2027 West End, Tortolo 09:00 – 17:00 8.0 hrs ashore The Royal Naval Dockyard, the westernmost point in Bermuda, not only showcases Bermuda's nautical heritage, but it also provides a home for an impressive array of attractions and shopping opportunities. The fortifications of the Royal Naval Dockyard were built by British convicts and slave labor during the mid-1800s. Since then it has served many purposes, including the headquarters for the Royal Navy and a strategic defense post for the British in the North Atlantic. Most recently it has been redeveloped into a fascinating attraction offering visitors a glimpse into Bermuda's history, and has become a fun place to shop or explore. The centerpiece of the Dockyard is the commanding Clocktower building, which once served as a naval store and the captain's offices. Today, it has been marvelously restored. Day 12 Apr 27, 2027 Gibraltar 08:00 – 17:00 9.0 hrs ashore Gibraltar is one of the most famous places in the world, linked to numerous legends. Here, the Mediterranean ended and with it the world, but fortunately today we know that’s not the case. Day 19 May 4, 2027 Alghero 08:00 – 17:00 9.0 hrs ashore Encircled by dramatic medieval walls, which rise abruptly from deep-blue waters, Alghero’s defences shelter one of Sardinia’s largest and most spectacular old towns. On a shore excursion you can discover Messina’s most important monument, the Duomo, which epitomizes the city’s phoenix-like ability to re-create itself from the ashes of its last disaster. It’s the reconstruction of a twelfth-century cathedral erected by Roger II, one of a series of great Norman churches of Sicily that include the sumptuous cathedrals of Palermo and Cefalù. Day 41 May 26, 2027 Malta 09:00 – 21:00 12.0 hrs ashore The UNESCO-protected port of Valletta, the capital of the island of Malta, is one of the must-see stops for every Mediterranean cruise of merit. You can admire this port, constructed in the second half of the 16th century by the Frenchman Jean de la Valette and moulded by the religious and military Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, from your MSC ship even before disembarking. The over 300 monuments rising in little more than half a square kilometre make this a place with one of the greatest density of historical attractions to visit during a cruise, not mentioning other attractions such as its beaches, seaside locales and restaurants. St. Paul preached in its Great Theater, while the facade of the Celsus Library survives as a testament to the city’s role as a center of learning and culture.
